We got away this half term and the flight made me realise I need to talk about hips and lower back care – I felt stiff and ancient when I got off!

We sit when we travel, we sit when we work, we meet up with friends by sitting in a cafe, we get home and sit on the sofa. If you think about it much of modern life seems to revolve around sitting! Unfortunately that is just not conducive to happy hips.

“Open” hips are a top priority for many yogis, and for good reason: Maintaining flexibility and stability in the hip joints is crucial for lower-back health, not to mention for cultivating overall freedom and ease in our bodies.

The hip region is located lateral and anterior to the gluteal region (i.e., the buttock), inferior to the iliac crest, and overlying the greater trochanter of the femur, or “thigh bone”. In adults, three of the bones of the pelvis have fused into the hip bone or acetabulum which forms part of the hip region.

Do you have happy hips? Make them more mobile with the lovely little workout below. It will loosen tight hips, improve your range of motion and circulation, alleviate back pain and more!

Tania’s Tips:

I LOVE swimming in cold water (or the after effects at least!). Having done this for a while I really wanted to go one step further and try cryotherapy, and a few weeks ago I finally did!

What’s very cold and makes your body think it is dying?! Cryotherapy!

If you don’t already know, cryotherapy involves standing in a sealed chamber with not many clothes on in temperatures as low as -90 degrees Celsius. The treatment only lasts a couple of minutes because any longer would literally kill you!

It has become popular with all sorts of celebrities and professional athletes for its healing effects (Usain Bolt, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, and Lebron James to name a few). The idea is that the extreme cold tricks your body into thinking it is dying and our fight-or-flight response is triggered, unleashing a huge rush of endorphins. I’ll do a lot for a natural high!

So far I have been three times. The second time was much colder for me but I was very tired on the back end of the last retreat of the year and this has an intensifying effect.  As does where you are in your cycle and what you have eaten – all very logical.

I went to 111Cryo at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge. A session usually costs £95 but if you want to try too they have kindly offered me a discount code for my friends and family – of which you all are! For 25% off just give them this CODE: TANIABYOGA25

The staff are lovely and they give you some exercises to do and some music to listen to, so the time goes fast. I’m booked on a course now so I’ll let you know if the benefits match the hype, but so far so good!

Thanks for reading and have a healthy, happy, fantastic week!
